Local military historian Lt. Col. JOHN SAINSBURY describes the raising and development of the Home Guard in Hertfordshire with particular reference to the Watford area. Members are invited to bring items of local Home Guard interest for discussion.

"'THE ROMANCE OF THE STRAW HAT"
Straw plaiting was an occupation for women, children and men during the 19th century. Slides and artefacts will illustrate the talk by straw plaiter VERONICA MAIN when she will tell us more about the life and work of straw plaiters.

Returning for yet another year, ALLAN WILMOT will be showing more fascinating historical film from his seemingly inexhaustible archives.

"THE JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION"
STEPHEN JOLLY who is the Marketing Manager for the Jubilee Line Extension project will give us an account of the planning and building of this latest enlargement of London's Underground railway.

"SIR JOSEPH BAZALGETTE - VICTORIA'S FORGOTTEN ENGINEER"
Between 1859 and 1875 Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-81) designed and constructed the system of drains, sewers and pumping stations which ended the scourges of cholera and typhoid and which keep the Thames and the capital clean to this day. STEPHEN HALLIDAY'S illustrated talk describes this massive project and Bazalgette's other work and suggests that he was an engineer of the first rank, comparable with I.K. Brunel and George Stephenson.
