"TRINITY HOUSE - SERVING THE MARINER"
From coal fires to satellites, KARL REE charts the 400 year history of Trinity House, the body responsible for lighthouses and other marine aids to navigation in England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

21 October 1999

"A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES"
JOANNE BROOKS, Education Director from the World Naval Base in Chatham, charts the history of Chatham Dockyard in Kent, from its beginnings in the reign of Henry VIII to the present day. There will be an opportunity to consider the effect of the Industrial Revolution on the Dockyard and also the role of the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust in turning "World Naval Base" into a visitor attraction for the 21st Century.

Continuing the seafaring theme, ALLAN WILMOT will be giving us a specially selected programme of maritime films from his vast film collection.

An informal evening when we partake of food and drink and members show slides and photos taken during the year, or interesting items of historical interest.

"THE ROYAL AIR FORCE MUSEUM"
How the site of the London Aerodrome and the inter-war Hendon Air Displays became Britain's national aviation museum. DAVID KEEN, Education Officer, tells the story of this important location and the fascinating museum which is based here.

"NEITHER NEW NOR A RIVER"
R. J. CAUSEBROOK, a member of the New River Action Group, will describe the water supply problems in the late 16th century and the actions which led to the building of the New River from Hertford to London. The river as it is today will be illustrated and details amplified to show its present role as an essential part of London's water supply and its position relative to the London Ring Main.
