"THE ROMANCE OF BRIDGES"
This talk by JOHN H. BOYES, President of GLIAS, will look at the history of the aesthetic and practical design of bridges, together with comments on their local associations and their legends. The history of bridge building is in part the history of mankind itself.

"THE VAN KANNEL REVOLVING DOOR CO."
MR. PEARSON will trace the history of the Van Kannel Revolving Door from its patenting in Washington in 1887 through to its registration in London in 1889 and the subsequent move of the V. K. Door Co. (UK) to Watford around 1911. Supplied to prestigious banks, institutions and shipping lines over nearly three decades, it seems that three such doors were fitted on the ill-fated liner, the 'Titanic'.

"FILM EVENING"
For our film evening this year ALLAN WILMOT will be showing a programme relating to the early years of aviation with films from Vickers Aviation, De Havilland, Shell, together with a film showing Croydon Airport in 1936

SOCIAL EVENING
An informal evening when we partake of food and drink and members show slides and photos taken during the year, or interesting items of historical interest. The results of the photo competition will be announced and awards made.

"THE IDLE WOMEN"
This is the story of the women who gave up comfortable jobs to become volunteer boatwomen ferrying vital cargoes between London and the industrial heart of Britain during the early years of World War II. RUNNALS DAVIS tells how they coped with boat handling, primitive conditions, the suspicions of the boat people, and the hazards of war, not to mention the battle of the sexes!

The London Underground has suffered from financial problems from its earliest years. The lecture, based on STEVEN HALLIDAY'S book Underground to Everywhere will explore the problems of building and operating the London Underground as experienced by some of the colourful personalities involved.

Tidal water to drive machinery has a very long history. Using historical evidence and modern research, this talk byDAVID PLUNKETT will concentrate on how they developed, operated and were restored at tidal London and at Eling, Southampton, where David has had over 25 years experience with them.
