THE HISTORY OF THE SKYSCRAPER
This lecture by ANTHEA STREETER begins in the 1880s with the earliest skyscrapers in Chicago and New York. It looks in detail at the distinct stylistic phases of skyscraper design during the 20th century. The story then moves to the countries of Asia Pacific, and closes with the imaginative and breathtaking images of 21 st century super-skyscrapers.

THE HISTORY OF LONDON'S DOCKS
TOM WAREHAM, Curator of Community & Maritime History at the Museum In Docklands, will give an illustrated talk on the rise and decline of the Port of London. The talk will explore the reason for the development of the port's dock facilities from the late 18th century onwards, the crisis into which the port declined in the late 19th century, its tribulations in the middle of the 20th century and the eventual closure of the old docks.

The Lecture will be followed by the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

THE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY
Continuing the theme of London, for our film evening this year ALLAN WILLMOTT has put together a collection of films showing the history of London's port from 1920 to 1980. The port changed and developed greatly during the 20th century and the period covered by the films is one of the most important periods in its history.

BENEATH CITY STREETS - LONDON'S UNSEEN HISTORY
An illustrated talk that highlights aspects of London's history that is now below ground and more recent developments that are meant to be below ground. Much of the information in this talk by PETER LAWRENCE, now an adult education tutor of London and architectural history, evolved from many years of studying London for a totally different perspective as a member of Scotland Yard's Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department.

BRITAIN'S LOST RAILWAYS
With over 10,000 miles to be explored, Britain has a remarkable legacy of lost railway lines. In the course of writing several books on the subject, PAUL ATTERBURY has travelled all over mainland Britain, tracing the remains to be seen in the landscape, as well as the buildings and infrastructure. The lecture is full of nostalgia, evoking as it does memories, through images past and present, of the golden age of Britain's railways.
